Easy Chicken and Brown Rice Slow Cooker (or Instapot) Dog Food with Veggies and Blueberries

This is a small-batch recipe that is perfect for those who want to feed their furry friends a homemade meal that is not only delicious and nutritious but takes almost no time at all. The recipe uses chicken breast, brown rice, and a variety of healthy vegetables and fruits to create a balanced and wholesome meal for your dog. Here is how you can make it:

Complexity: ★☆☆☆

Prep Time: 10 mins Cook Time: 40 mins

Cool Time: 1 hrs Total Time: <2 hrs

Makes: 4247 calories of food which was ~4 days for my 50lb dog | See our 'how much to feed' guide to determine how many days of food this will provide for your dog.

Ingredients

  • 2lbs organic skinless, boneless chicken breast, roasted and diced (1 of the 3-pack here)

  • 352 grams of uncooked brown rice

  • 278 grams of organic frozen carrots, corn, peas, and green beans (link)

  • 218 grams of organic frozen blueberries

  • 119 grams of safflower oil

  • 18 grams of fish oil (link)

  • 34 grams of Balance IT Canine Plus supplement (link)

Tools

  • Food scale

  • 1 slow cooker or Instapot

  • Cutting board and knife

Instructions

  1. Rinse the brown rice and place it in a pot or rice cooker. Add the same volume of water as rice. This is slightly less water than normal, but your veggies and chicken will release water as they cook.

  2. Add the diced chicken, frozen carrots, corn, peas, green beans, and safflower oil to the Instapot or slow cooker.

  3. Cook on the 'multi-grain' setting for 45 minutes.

  4. Turn off the heat and add the frozen blueberries, stirring to combine.

  5. Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature.

  6. Once cool, add the fish oil and Balance IT Plus supplement to the mixture, stirring well to ensure even distribution.

  7. Portion the mixture into daily serving sizes according to your dog's size and calorie needs, and store in an airtight container in the fridge or freezer.

  8. Serve today's portion of food to your dog, watching them enjoy their delicious and nutritious meal!

Tips and Notes

  • If you are short on time, you can set everything to cook in the Instapot and come back later to add the vitamins and fish oil

  • If you don't want to make this much food, you can halve the recipe. If you have a large slower cooker or Instapot, you may be able to double this recipe.

  • This recipe provides 4 days of food for my dog, but please see the 'how much to feed' guide to determine the appropriate amount for your own dog.

  • Wait for the food to cool to at least below 70 degrees Celsius (feels only slightly warm if you stick your finger in) before adding the fish oil and Balance IT Plus supplement. The heat can degrade the oil and vitamins.
